How to Play Hashi
What is Hashi?
Hashi (橋, Japanese for "bridge"), also known as Hashiwokakero or Bridges, is a logic puzzle invented in Japan. The goal is to connect all islands with horizontal or vertical bridges according to specific rules.
Objective
Connect all numbered islands with bridges so that every island has exactly the number of bridges specified by its number, and all islands are connected to each other (you can travel from any island to any other island by following bridges).
The Rules
- 1.Island numbers: Each island (circle with a number) must have exactly that many bridges connected to it.
- 2.Bridge limits: You can build at most 2 bridges between any pair of islands.
- 3.Straight lines only: Bridges must run horizontally or vertically. No diagonal bridges.
- 4.No crossing: Bridges cannot cross other bridges or pass through other islands.
- 5.All connected: When complete, all islands must be connected in one group. You should be able to travel from any island to any other using the bridges.
Example
Consider an island with the number "4". This means exactly 4 bridges must connect to this island. If it has neighbors in all 4 directions, you might connect:
- 1 bridge to the left
- 1 bridge to the right
- 2 bridges downward
This adds up to 4 bridges, satisfying the island's requirement.
Tips & Strategies
- Start with high numbers: Islands with 7 or 8 bridges have limited placement options since you can only put 2 bridges in each direction.
- Corner islands: A "4" in a corner (only 2 possible directions) must have 2 bridges in each direction. Similarly, a "3" in a corner must have at least one bridge in each direction.
- Edge islands: A "6" on the edge (only 3 possible directions) must have 2 bridges in each direction.
- Avoid isolation: A "1" island cannot connect only to another "1" island (unless they're the only two islands), as they would be isolated from the rest.
- Two "2"s together: Two adjacent "2" islands can share at most 1 bridge, otherwise they'd be isolated from the network.
- Keep track of remaining bridges: Green islands have all their bridges placed. Focus on islands that still need connections.
Controls
- Click an island to select it
- Click another island to add a bridge between them
- Click an existing bridge to cycle: 1 bridge → 2 bridges → remove
- Esc to deselect the current island
- Ctrl+Z to undo
- Ctrl+Y to redo
Island Colors
- 4White - Needs more bridges
- 4Green - Has exactly the right number of bridges
- 4Red - Has too many bridges (error)
- 4Blue - Currently selected
